Not for Everybody

I'm not for everybody.

I'm fully aware some people might not care for my confidence, my candour, or my willingness to challenge the status quo (or the authority figures who maintain it) when I feel that's what needs to happen.

The list of traits that people might not like about me is pretty long, in fact.

But for every person who dislikes my confidence, there are others who admire my leadership.

For every person put off by my candour, there are others who love my sincerity.

For every person who doesn't like my willingness to challenge authority, there are others who are really, really glad that I do.

I know I'm never going to please everybody, make everybody happy, or be the perfect person for every situation.

And I'm okay with that.

Can you think of one brand that is universally liked by everybody?

Neither can I.

And it's a good thing.

Great brands don't try to be universally liked. They define themselves however they see fit, then seek to attract and serve those customers who will appreciate them for who they are.

Not everybody will appreciate them, obviously. But those people will find other brands they will like and support instead.

Gene Simmons, bassist and co-lead singer of rock band KISS, was once quoted as saying, "People either love KISS or hate us with all of their guts, and that’s the way we like it."

It's the way I like it too, Gene.

I'm not for everybody.

And most likely, neither are you.

Life is better when you can acknowledge and accept that simple truth.
